Southern Wisdom is a charming and humorous book full of illustrations and explanations for classic Southern traditions, language, wisdom, and culture.
With more “yes ma’ams,” “no sirs,” casseroles, and monograms than you can shake a stick at, this book will have you pondering, and chuckling at, the origins of Southern idioms and customs.
If there are three things that you should learn about the South, it's:
1) When in doubt, always ask your grandmother
2) Football is the easiest and most argumentative topic you could bring up
3) Always bring a pair of cowboy boots, seersucker clothing, and a smile.
Southerners share a unique culture, including their own version of the English language, shaped over generations. Southern Wisdom is a charming and humorous illustrated exploration of the stories, history, and sayings that make up the culture, delving into both age-old and modern traditions. The people of the South may be known for their iconic accents, but did you know that there's multiple of them? Or that the style of barbecue changes based on where you're at? And if you thought normal weddings are a big event, Southern weddings are preceded by so many parties, which you know aren't small considering the sizes of families down here. If you’re not from the South, bless your heart and pay attention—there’s wisdom to be found in this heartfelt, humorous culture. Find knowledge on:
Family and what it means when someone says, "Mama'll have a duck fit."
Celebrations, including Mardi Gras, football, and marriage.
Charm, especially how to sound charming when you're gossiping.
Food, such as everything you should eat when you're there.
Superstitions that cover the graveyard to the family home.
And more!
On top of all these fun sayings, a full Southern Dictionary at the back of the book will help you really wow natives when you decide to visit the South. Laugh alongside author Emily Welch as she explains and explores the extraordinary things about life in Southern Wisdom.
