"Philip's Atlas of the World" also features a colourful and highly informative 50-page 'Introduction to World Geography', packed with maps, charts, diagrams and text explaining key world themes such as climate, geology, trade, agriculture, industry, population and health. The unique 'World Cities' section includes urban area and city centre maps for 69 of the world's largest and most economically important cities, including all major capitals. New maps of Las Vegas, Orlando, Montreal and Toronto have been added for this edition. The placenames on these maps are included in the main index at the rear of the atlas. In addition, the 18-page 'Images of Earth' section shows spectacular satellite views of 17 major cities and regions across the globe. The 34-page A-Z 'Gazetteer of Nations', providing key facts and figures for every sovereign state, and illustrated with flags and locator maps, has been fully revised and updated for this edition. At the rear of the atlas, topical maps are provided for 'Regions in the News' including the West Bank and the South Asia earthquake.
The 85,000-name index, including geographical features and historical place names as well as towns and cities, gives full latitude/longitude co-ordinates and letter-figure grid references. A 'Geographical Glossary', with over 1,000 entries, explains the derivations of many unfamiliar place-names - for example: wadi = dry watercourse; jebel = mountain. The most comprehensive and authoritative world atlas available in its class, "Philip's Atlas of the World" is recommended for home, college, business and library use.
