In an attempt to raise a dormant spirit lying somewhere between Fred Dibnah and Bonnie and Clyde, Dan Kieran has been on a journey to discover why life in modern Britain is so absurd and unfulfilling. During this journey he discovered that everything wrong with Britain comes down, somewhere along the line, to just one thing: British law. And our laws are becoming as eccentric as our moustache clubs, shin-kicking championships and even, God bless her, our Queen. Dan's satirical crime spree will include: joining a group of protestors, five of whom were arrested for eating cakes in Parliament Square - to discover how our civil liberties have been eroded since Labour came to power; spending the night on the roof of a bus station in Derby with an old lady called Dorothy to expose the truth about why all towns in Britain look the same; meeting John Nicholson, an expert on riots, rebellions and revolts who explains that modern day protestors are not the loony lefties the tabloid press would have us believe but true patriots fulfilling the destiny of the True Born Englishman.
It also includes: tracking down the people being sent to prison even though they haven't broken any laws thanks to Anti-Social Behaviour Orders; wearing a top hat in Hull, and the boy with Tourettes Syndrome who got an ASBO for swearing; discovering how afraid we should really be of terrorism; playing for the Ashes of the Magna Carta at an (illegal) protest cricket match in Parliament Square. (Surely he'll get nicked for that one...) We've seen all types of desperate behaviour people will lower themselves to for celebrity status but we've never seen anyone deliberately become a criminal to point out how authoritarian our Government has become. Well, not for a while, anyway. Dan's goal was to get in the Sun and on Newsnight on the same day, which would be no mean feat. So there was nothing for it. His criminal life would have to begin with a picnic. Dressed as a teddy bear.
