The hugely popular monthly column Great Escapes has featured reviews of specially chosen establishments that are updated regularly to make sure that each one is up to standard and can be fully recommended. The best of these have been selected for inclusion here. Each of the establishments featured in the book has been checked by Country Living and measured against a strict list of criteria including how warm the welcome extended to each visitor, whether or not the food is made from fresh produce, how tasteful the furnishings and whether good-sized beds, baths and towels are supplied. These are not places that feature trouser presses, golf clubs or spas that feel like business centres or urban hotels in the countryside. Each place will probably have no more than a dozen rooms and the price will be under GBP 100 per room, with the exception of a few luxury inclusions.
