Réalisée en 1885 dans le cadre des « Hawaiian government surveys » par William Dewitt Alexander (1833-1913), royal surveyor-general (« arpenteur en chef ») d'un royaume sur le point de tomber sous la coupe des États-Unis, cette carte de la deuxième plus grande île de l'archipel, reconnaissable à ses deux volcans, superpose topographie et toponymie rigoureuses ainsi que découpage géopolitique et cadastral précis découlant du partage des terres organisé par le Great Mahele (« grande division ») de 1848 entre les terres de la couronne (en jaune), des chefs coutumiers et des métayers (en vert). Toutes ou presque tomberont dans l'escarcelle du « territoire des États-Unis », devenu 50e état du pays en 1959.

Conducted in 1885 as part of the « Hawaiian government surveys » by William Dewitt Alexander (1833-1913), royal surveyor-general of a kingdom on the verge of falling under the control of the United States, this map of the second largest island in the archipelago, recognizable by its two volcanoes, superimposes rigorous topography and toponymy as well as precise geopolitical and cadastral divisions resulting from the division of land organized by the Great Mahele (« great division ») of 1848 between the lands belonging to the crown (in yellow), customary chiefs and share-farmers (in green). Almost all of them were to fall into the hands of the « territory of the United States », when it became the country's 50th state in 1959.
