He has written a dozen books on management of national parks and related issues and three guidebooks (with his wife, Martha Manning) on walking/hiking. The first, Walking Distance: Extraordinary Hikes for Ordinary People, was published by Oregon State University Press in 2013 and offers first-hand descriptions of 30 long-distance hikes from around the world. The second, Walks of a Lifetime: Extraordinary Hikes from Around the World, was published by FalconGuides in 2017 and offers first-hand descriptions of 30 long-distance and multi-day hikes around the world and 30 short essays on hiking-related issues. The third book, Walks of a Lifetime in America’s National Parks: Extraordinary Hikes in Exceptional Places, was published by FalconGuides in 2020 and offers descriptions of the natural and cultural history of all the national parks and recommendations and first-hand descriptions of the best hikes in each park.
