Designed as a souvenir for the visitor to Indonesia and an introduction to the wildlife and wilderness of this extraordinary country. From teeming reefs and rainforests to tigers, "dragons" and volcanoes, few countries boast such impressive natural diversity as that found across the 13000 islands of Indonesia. This evocative yet practical exploration of Indonesian parks and wilderness areas brings to life the natural splendour of this, the world's largest archipelago. With 320 photographs, all the major parks of the country are described. Specially drawn colour maps show each area's main features, and visitor information panels provide full details on access, accommodation and activities including hiking, rafting, birdwatching, fishing and diving.

Janet Cochrane is a travel writer and nature tourism consultant who first became involved in Indonesian life on conservation projects for VSO. She has led many adventure tours to Indonesia's protected areas, and has written about them extensively. She is based in Hull, UK. Gerald Cubitt, who lives in Cape Town, South Africa, is a world renowned nature photographer and specialises in the wildlife and landscapes of South-east Asia. Among his many publications, Wild Malaysia, This is Malaysia and This is Borneo are all published by New Holland. Alain Compost runs the Archipelago slide agency in Indonesia and brings to his photography a lifetime's field experience and a skilful eye for the printed image. He lives in Bogor, Indonesia.

The National Parks and Other Wild Places of Indonesia comprises six main chapters which together cover each of the main islands or island groups that make up the country. Each chapter comprises in turn a number of different parks and wilderness areas - each of which is accompanied by a locator map and a visitor information panel with a summary of salient facts about the site. The introduction gives an overview of the country's biogeography, as well as a history of its parks and a summary of its current conservation issues. Reference material at the back includes full contact details for all sites covered, as well as a list of further reading and useful addresses.
