Richard Cannings is a veteran biologist, birder, and nature writer. A lifetime resident of B.C.’s Okanagan Valley, he is a founding director of the Okanagan Similkameen Conservation Alliance and a member of the national board of the Nature Conservancy of Canada. He is the author of several books, including British Columbia: A Natural History and The New B.C. Roadside Naturalist. Russell Cannings has been an avid birder since his childhood in B.C.’s Okanagan. He has worked extensively as a field biologist throughout the province. In 2012 MacLean's called him "Canada's Top Birder". He now lives in New Zealand.
