We call this a "shortcut" guide because that's exactly what it is: a very direct take on what's best in Edinburgh and the nearby Highlands...and what can be skipped. Our author Lucy Gillmore is a long-time resident of Scotland (first Edinburgh and now Invernesse) and she provides a concise but enjoyably erudite introduction to the city and the Highlands. But most importantly, Gillmore is not shy about telling readers what's worth their time...and what they can skip without regret. The highly portable, smaller than pocket-sized book contains dozens of evocative color photos, detailed maps, exact pricing, opening hours, and the other important details that will make your trip smoother and less hectic. It features candid reviews from an author who has visited every hotel, restaurant, museum, attraction, shop and nightspot in the guide -- and many more! Offers key info on scenic drives in the Highlands, along with information for all sorts of travelers from backpackers on a budget to honeymooners looking to splash out.
Lucy Gillmore was the deputy travel editor at The Independent, but after eight years on the travel desk left London to move to Scotland. She specializes in travel and food and writes for newspapers such as The Guardian, The Independent and The Times and magazines including Food and Travel, Olive House & Garden and Conde Nast Traveller. She also updated the Wallpaper* City Guide to Edinburgh. After a couple of years in Edinburgh she headed even further north and now lives in the hills above Loch Ness in the Highlands.
