Introduces Greece's principal churches, monasteries, castles and art from the early Christian period and the rule of Byzantium, followed by the incursions of French, Catalans and Italians, before the final occupation by the Turks. The rest of the book is an alphabetical gazetteer.
The author of this book introduces Greece's principal churches, monasteries, castles and art from the early Christian period and the rule of Byzantium, followed by the incursions of French, Catalans and Italians, before the final occupation by the Turks. After an outline history of the period and some introductory remarks on its architectural and artistic conventions, the rest of the book is organized as a gazetteer, with locations in alphabetical order and a simple star rating system. As well as a selection of photographs, the book is equipped with the necessary maps, and ground plans of the more important or complicated castles and churches. Early Christian basilicas with their imposing scale, the wide proliferation and variety of Byzantine churches, their tiled cupolas encrusted inside with mosaics or frescoes, and the craggy ruins of the many castles still to be found in Greece, both Frankish and Byzantine, are all noted and described here.
