Sick of being stuck in a London office where the furthest she had to walk was to the drink machine, author Gillian Orrell decided to escape city life to tackle New Zealand's nine Great Walks. New Boots in New Zealand is her humorous and highly enjoyable first-hand account of walking the nine Great Walks solo within a matter of months. In it you'll discover much about New Zealand's rugged and unforgiving landscapes whilst learning additional facts, anecdotes and insights into New Zealand's culture, history and peoples. As a solo tramper Gillian gives you a unique insight into what tramping in New Zealand is really like, describing the dazzling and diverse landscapes with ease and offering handy tips and wry observations that you'll find in no other book. This wild land survives in part because it was one of the last places on Earth to be discovered by human beings. The rugged and isolated terrain of the nine Great Walks offer a natural alternative for adventure seeking visitors with Gillian's writing drawing you in as if you were right there on the trail with her.
Originally published in 2006, this new edition contains updated text where necessary (including websites and other key information). 'New Boots in New Zealand' is aimed at both first-time and experienced trampers, anyone who intends to go on the Great Walks, and armchair travellers of all ages.
Gillian Orrell was educated at Oxford University, before working for nine years as a Chartered Accountant and Management Consultant in London. She then took sabbatical leave to pursue writing as a career. In her spare time, Gillian plays the piano and also writes - and occasionally performs - comic songs. She lives in Hexham in the north of England, close to some of Britain's greatest walks.
