As such it must be taken up by the reader, whom I forewarn to expect neither a narrative of scientific exploration, nor to look for the flights of fancy which embellish the book of a glove-trotting bookmaker." Thus are the author's modest intentions displayed in the preface to this work, first published in 1894 and here reproduced in facsimile. Modesty aside, the present-day reader will find a great deal of interest in the author's record of the places and people he meets in his journey from the Mediterranean to Bombay, thence along the Tigris and Euphrates to the Persian Gulf.
