From sleepy inns to manor-house hotels for fabulous occasions, from island boltholes to the odd jaw-dropping castle, each of our places combines character with comfort and a great welcome. A weekend break in a historic city, a night away on business, a family holiday by the sea - there's something for everyone here. You'll dine well, too: Michelin stars sprinkle themselves throughout this 13th edition, and there are plenty of chefs who put seasonality and provenance at the top of their list. We are committed to the small hotels of Britain, run by enterprising people who do what they do best. We look for what we like; we celebrate the beautiful and the unusual. Our combination of fresh honest write-ups, colour photographs, clear symbols, excellent maps, clear directions and quick reference indices is what makes our guides so popular with readers - and helps put "British Hotels & Inns" at the top of the best-seller list.

Tom Bell has worked on Sawday's British Hotels guide for over 10 years and has a real eye for what makes a place special. He has also contributed to guides on Australia and New Zealand and to travel websites. Alastair has built a team of talented editors who are as committed as he is to the search for authenticity and personality in places to stay. They are also 'driving' the world's first carbon 'neutral' publishing company; the search for a reduced ecological footprint is a serious one. The company has won The Queen's Award for Enterprise in the Sustainable Development category, an award from Business Commitment to the Environment and a Green Apple Award and moved to its own eco-offices in January 2006.
