In 1997 the first female expedition walked to the North Pole. Amongst them were mother and daughter, Sue and Victoria Riches. Aged fifty, Sue was diagnosed as having breast cancer, which resulted in a mastectomy. This looks at their lives before and after the expedition, providing insight into the highs and lows of polar travel.
Suffering from breast cancer gave Sue Riches a new perspective on life, which contributed to her decision to join the North Pole expedition. She has been able to lead a happy and fulfilled life since her mastectomy, but is only too aware that 1 in 12 of all women will suffer from the disease at some point in their lifetime, and that over 1000 die each month.
