Aged fifty, Sue was diagnosed as having breast cancer, which resulted in a mastectomy. This looks at their lives before and after the expedition, providing insight into the highs and lows of polar travel.

Suffering from breast cancer gave Sue Riches a new perspective on life, which contributed to her decision to join the North Pole expedition. She has been able to lead a happy and fulfilled life since her mastectomy, but is only too aware that 1 in 12 of all women will suffer from the disease at some point in their lifetime, and that over 1000 die each month.
