This third title in New Holland's 'Visitor's Guide' series homes in on Lake Taupo, which attracts thousands of visitors, many of whom make a regular pilgrimage to the lake or to the bustling township that shares its name. The popularity of the Taupo area has a lot to do with its growing reputation as a venue for adventure sports, but there is much else to see and do here and in the Central Plateau at large, from historic monuments and volcanic features to wilderness tramps. Chapters cover Taupo; Turangi and Tokaanu; Whakapapa Village and Tongariro National Park; Ohakune, Raetihi and Waiouru; and Mangakino and western Lake Taupo. Each chapter includes an introduction to the area, including Maori and settler history, local geology and flora and fauna, followed by details of outdoor activities, walks and tramps, historic sites and scenic attractions, and much more.

Margaret Jefferies lived for 15 years in Whakapapa Village while working in Tongariro National Park. After a further 15 years living in Nepal, Papua New Guinea and Laos, Margaret returned to live in Taupo. Travel and a love of the outdoors have given her a keen appreciation of all that Taupo and the central North Island have to offer as a place to work and to enjoy life.
