A COMPLETELY UP-TO-DATE GUIDE to one of New Zealand most popular scenic and historic routes for trampers and cyclists, the Otago Central Rail Trail. The Otago Central Rail Trail is a hike and bike trail that follows the old railway line built through Central Otago in the late 19th century, at a time when bridges and viaducts were constructed in hand-shaped stone. This guide divides the trail into 12 easy-to-complete sections, and includes all sorts of information on: * transport options to, from and along the trail, including luggage transfers * length and approximate times to comfortably complete each section * what terrain to expect at each stage and interesting features along the way * local plants and birdlife, plus a short history of the trail * all the good spots to camp, swim, picnic and rest * a complete list of Rail Trail accommodation, including prices and contact details

Gerald Cunningham lives with his wife Susan in their 93-year-old mudbrick villa at Lauder in Central Otago. He retired in 2001 at the age of 55 to follow other interests, which include writing, photography, playing golf, fly fishing, wearing loud shirts, riding his motorcycle and collecting antique furniture - as well as just loafing.
