A right to light is an easement. It is a right acquired by one party over another's land. Sounds simple enough, but unfortunately, it seldom is. Through the insights of the late John Anstey and with the additions of expert Lance Harris, a one time colleague of John, this book sets out to shed light on the mysteries and pitfalls of this right.
A right to light is an easement. It is a right acquired by one party over another's land. Sounds simple enough, but unfortunately, it seldom is. Through the unrivalled insights of the late John Anstey and with the additions of current expert Lance Harris, a one time colleague of John, this book sets out to shed light on the mysteries and pitfalls of this right. Using personal experiences, and a wealth of anecdotes and diagrams, it covers all aspects of this contentious topic. Previous editions of this much-loved book have helped countless students, surveyors, developers and lawyers get to grips with this complex subject. The commentary, examples, legal points and anecdotes have all been thoroughly updated for the fourth edition of this classic, to ensure that rights of light can be accessibly understood by a new audience.

John Anstey, like his father before him, was one of the world's leading experts on rights of light. He was founder and partner in Anstey Horne & Co, a leading firm of rights of light and party wall specialists. This is one of the best-selling series he wrote on rights of light, boundary disputes and party walls for RICS Books. Lance Harris joined Anstey Horne & Co as a trainee in 1978 working under John Anstey. Today he is a chartered building surveyor, joint senior partner at the firm and is recognised as an expert in the field of rights of light.
