Recent years have seen a growth in environmental and occupational noise. This book provides a guide to the law relating to noise, and offers advice to those responsible for controlling or monitoring noise. It discusses the sources of noise problems; solutions for control; and noise prevention.
Since publication of the first edition of this book in 1979, environmental and occupational noise have caused increasing concern; a 1993 survey revealed that one in three people claimed that environmental noise spoiled their home life to some extent. Neighbour noise complaints have risen by 320% in ten years and those about industrial and commercial noise by 230%. In addition, 80% of claims to the DSS in respect of industrial injury allege occupational hearing damage. This book provides a reliable and comprehensive guide to the law relating to noise and provides advice for all those who have a responsibility to controlling or monitoring noise. The various sources of noise problems are considered in detail together with their consequences and advice for their control; noise prevention is also discussed in detail and the importance of considering its effects at the planning stage of developments is stressed. This book should become a major source of reference for Environmental Health Officers, planners, legal practitioners, industrial employers, trade unions, the construction industry, etc.
