Mental health needs are universal. About half of us will end up having a diagnosable mental health problem at some point in our lives, and we all know what it is like to have a bad day. We understand that conflicts can be hard and that they can often bring out the worst in us.
There are simple ways to be ready for when mental health needs arise during conflicts. Mental Health and Conflicts: A Handbook for Empowerment introduces different mental health perspectives, dispels common stereotypes, and provides tools for empowering mental health communication. After learning these skills, you will be ready to support anyone’s mental health needs in conflicts.
This book is designed to help laypeople as well as professional conflict resolvers, people living with mental health problems as well as people with no knowledge of mental health, and those dealing with conflicts that are specifically focused on mental health as well as those facing any other kind of conflict. It includes case studies, personal stories, and takeaway tools to help readers apply the skills to the situations they face in their personal and professional lives.
Dan Berstein combines his professional expertise as a mediator, his academic background in mental health and public health, and his personal experience living with bipolar disorder to develop innovative online programs teaching people to talk about mental health, address challenging behaviors, and resolve conflicts. Through his company, MH Mediate, Dan has trained thousands of people including individuals, organizations, and government agencies at the city, state, and federal levels. Dan is also Co-Chair of the Diversity Committee of the American Bar Association Section on Dispute Resolution and co-founder of the Dispute Resolution in Mental Health Initiative at the CUNY Dispute Resolution Center. He holds a master’s degree in Mental Health from the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health, a bachelor’s degree from the Wharton School at the University Pennsylvania, and a mediation certification from the New York Peace Institute where he formerly sat on the Mediator Advisory Board. Dan's book, "Mental Health and Conflicts: A Handbook for Empowerment" was published by the ABA in 2022 and his TEDxTalk, "How to Talk About Mental Health Without Offending Everyone," is viewable at https://youtu.be/nstRHTVv0Aw
