Trial: A Guide from Start to Finish -- Perspectives from Opposing Counsel is a collaboration of two trial lawyers who have tried many complex case courtrooms across the country. It takes readers through each stage of a jury trial, starting with the filing of a lawsuit long before a jury trial begins, and ending in the motion practice that concludes long after the jury’s verdict. The authors divide the trial process into its fifteen segments, and each author writes from the perspective of either the defendant or the plaintiff, giving a full-rounded look at trial practice itself. Each of the authors’ numerous victories (and occasional losses) in the courtroom have brought them valuable experience and taught them lessons about each aspect of the jury trial process. This book is their effort to share those lessons with other trial lawyers and trial lawyers-to-be.
Mikal Watts is a founding partner of Watts Guerra LLP, located in San Antonio, Texas, and has decades of experience litigating complex mass tort cases involving defective products and corporate malfeasance. Watts Guerra has more than twenty lawyers and 100 employees in seven offices located in Texas and California that handle catastrophic personal injury, toxic torts, product liability, automotive defects, medical device, pharmaceutical, and commercial litigation. Sawnie A. McEntire is a founding shareholder in the trial firm of Parsons McEntire McCleary PLLC, which has offices in Dallas, Texas, and Houston, Texas. He also serves as a director of the firm and managing partner of the Dallas office. Sawnie has been practicing trial law since 1980, and he has tried dozens of cases to successful jury verdicts. Historically, he has specialized in product liability defense and business tort litigation, representing both plaintiffs and defendants. In addition to Texas, he served as lead counsel defending product liability and other types of cases throughout the nation, including in California, New Mexico, Arizona, Washington State, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Missouri, Arkansas, Tennessee, Florida, Missouri, Georgia, Delaware, Virginia, West Virginia, New York, Delaware, Massachusetts, and New Jersey. He also served as a national trial counsel for a Japanese automotive manufacturer, and as lead counsel on several statewide trial teams for several clients in pharmaceutical and medical device litigation.
