This guide is a useful source of reference for the judiciary, for personal injuries law practitioners, and for professionals in related areas such as insurance. 'The Guidelines' are designed to provide a clear and logical framework for the assessment of personal injury damages. Now in their sixth edition, they are up-to-date.
The first edition of this title was regarded as a landmark publication in personal injury practice. Each succeeding edition has built on this reputation and the book has now firmly established itself as essential reading for all those involved in the area of personal injury. The Guidelines are designed to provide a clear and logical framework for the assessment of damages while leaving the discretion of the assessor unfettered, since every case must depend to a degree on its own facts. They provide an invaluable guide to all those involved in personal injury litigation: solicitors, barristers, insurance companies, trade unions, and the medical defence organizations. As with previous editions, all judges involved in hearing personal injury cases will automatically receive a copy of the book. This sixth edition has been fully updated to take account of inflation and decisions made in the two and a half years since the previous edition. The coverage and structure have also been comprehensively reviewed to ensure that they remain as accurate and helpful as possible.
Significant enhancements for this edition include: - revision and enlargement of the section on internal organs, particularly in relation to awards for respiratory disability and injury to the digestive system; - a new section on dermatitis; - new comments on sexual abuse and physical abuse in breach of trust, in the section on psychiatric damage; - additional guidance in respect of the lower awards of damages in certain categories of injury.

The book is edited by a working party of the Judicial Studies Board, under the chairmanship of Mr Justice Bell. The members of the working party are all lawyers and personal injury specialists - John Cherry QC, Edwin Glasgow CBE, QC, D.A.K. Hughes, solicitor, and R.J. Sutcliffe, solicitor.
