The Best I Could. By Singapore's best-known criminal lawyer. First published 2008 and 16 weeks on the National Bestsellers List. Over 20,000 copies sold. Reprinted 7 times since 2009. This new edition includes excerpts from the late author's forthcoming book "It's Easy To Cry".
The Best I Could traces the life and career of Subhas Anandan, an advocate whose tireless devotion to the Singapore criminal justice system is legendary. In this highly personal autobiography, first published in 2009, Subhas describes not only the many sensational cases he covered, including those of Took Leng How, Anthony Ler and Ah Long San, but also his views on mandatory death sentences and 'police entrapment.' Subhas Anandan, who passed away in January 2015 surely was the face of criminal defense in Singapore. But why did he choose to represent clients who were to all intents and purposes guilty? And were the criminals he represented the monsters they were made out to be? Did he ever feel sorry for the clients he represented? What were his views on the death penalty, and which parts of the legal system did he want reformed? Read all about this in The Best I Could.

Subhas Anandan headed the Criminal Law department in KhattarWong for several years before moving on to RHTLaw Taylor Wessing. A renowned criminal lawyer in Singapore, he is credited with the conduct of several landmark cases that have shaped the face of criminal law in Singapore. He handled well over 1500 criminal cases from murder and kidnapping to drug trafficking, and defended those involved in white-collar crimes and arrested under the Internal Security Act (ISA). In 2001, he was awarded the Legal Eagle Award by the Law Society of Singapore. In 2014 he was honoured by the Association of Muslim Lawyers (Singapore) for championing pro bono work. The "Yellow Ribbon Fund Subhas Anandan Star Bursary Award" was also launched to provide financial support to ex-inmates who wish to pursue further education
