A comprehensive examination of national security laws and the tensions between the public's right to know, and the government's right to protect its interests.
The book, a compilation of essays that look at the constitutional foundations and limitations of the U.S. government in a contemporary context, examines how laws and freedoms collide when information is leaked to the media. It is a practical guide, in easy-to-understand language that journalists, lawyers, and government officials will find to be of great value.

Paul Rosenzweig, of Washington D.C., is the founder of Red Branch Consulting PLLC, a homeland security consulting company and a Senior Adviser to The Chertoff Group. Rosenzweig formerly served as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Policy and twice as Acting Assistant Secretary for International Affairs in the Department of Homeland Security, where his responsibilities ranged from aviation security, border control and visa policy to international data sharing, biological threats and international relations. Timothy J. McNulty, of Chicago, IL., is a veteran journalist whose career in national and foreign news coverage includes roles as both a war correspondent and White House correspondent. He is a Lecturer at Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism, Media, Integrated Marketing Communications and Co-Director of the school's National Security Journalism Initiative. McNulty was the Chicago Tribune's Public Editor and, earlier, Associate Managing Editor for Foreign News. Ellen Shearer, of Washington D.C., is the William F. Thomas Professor in the Medill School of Journalism, Media, Integrated Marketing Communications at Northwestern University and Director of the school's Washington Program. She also is Co-Director of the school's National Security Journalism initiative. She is a member of the board of advisers of the Defense Information School Foundation and is a Past President of the Washington Press Club Foundation.
