Fluid Structure Interaction 2009 is the fifth conference in this successful series. The conference brings together international experts from various application fields to exchange information and knowledge on fluid structure interaction problems, giving them the opportunity to interact with one another and to provide valuable cross breeding of ideas and techniques. Papers presented at the conference cover the following areas: Computational Methods; Experimental Studies and Validation; Flow Induced Vibrations; Acoustics; Hydrodynamic Forces; Offshore Structures; Response of Structures including Fluid Dynamics; Fluid Pipeline Interactions.
Section 1: Computational methods Heat and mass transfer in compressible fluid saturated porous media with the boundary element method; A novel fluid-structure interaction model for lubricating gaps of piston machines; A singular value decomposition based generalized finite difference method for fluid solid interaction problems; Multiphase modeling to predict finite deformations of elastic objects in free surface flows Section 2: Experimental studies and validation Fluid-structure interaction between trains and noise-reduction barriers: numerical and experimental analysis; Turbulent jets issuing from the rectangular nozzle with a rectangular notch at the midspan; Numerical study of water barriers produced by underwater explosions Section 3: Flow induced vibrations Simulation analysis using CFD on vibration behaviors of circular cylinders subjected to free jets through narrow gaps in the vicinity of walls; Flow-induced vibrations of offshore flare towers and flare booms; Aeroelastic analysis of long-span bridges using time domain methods; Simplified numerical method for understanding the aeroelastic response of line slender structures under vortex shedding action; Flow induced vibration of corrugated rod subjected to axial flow Section 4: Acoustics Simulation of elastic scattering with a coupled FMBE-FE approach; A first step to Fluid-Structure interaction inside Solid Propellant Rocket Motors Section 5: Hydrodynamic forces The effect of the wave radiation on the second-order steady loads for arbitrary bodies; The transient interaction of plates with extreme water waves: effects of deformability and hull cavitation; Hydrodynamic forces acting on vertically translating bodies in free surface water; Interpretation of Doppler effect-based vertical velocity measurements in the coastal waters of Estonia, Baltic Sea: possible influence of upwelling, Langmuir circulation and turbidity Section 6: Offshore structures An n-body displacement framework for marine hydrodynamics; Hull-tether-riser dynamics of deep water tension leg platforms; New analysis of square section column plastic folding under axial impact for offshore shock absorbers Section 7: Response of structures including fluid dynamics Numerical simulation of nonlinear oval-type vibration in cylindrical water storage tanks; Stress singularities produced by fluid structure interactions; Evaluation of a Euler/Lagrange coupling method for the ditching simulation of helicopter structures; Modelling of the Francis turbine runner in power stations.
