Looks at the many landscapes and ecosystems found across China, and examines the vast range of wildlife species the habitats support. This book includes sections on threats to biodiversity and on wildlife conservation which look at the challenges that lay ahead if the landscapes and wildlife wealth of China are to be secured.
At a time when China is forging ahead as one of the world's fastest developing economic powers, this book celebrates the fact that it is also a country of spectacular landscapes and fascinating wildlife. China is one of the world's most diverse countries, and from the high peaks and stony plateaux of the Himalaya to the scorching deserts of the country's north-west and the sub-tropical forests of the far south, it is home to an extraordinary range of wildlife. As well as the iconic Giant Pandas, one of the world's great conservation symbols, there are some surprises here too - tigers, elephants, snow leopards and Bactrian camels are all found in China. In this revised and updated new edition, author John Mackinnon looks at the many landscapes and ecosystems found across this huge country, and examines the vast range of wildlife species each habitat supports. Sections on current threats to biodiversity and on wildlife conservation look at the challenges that lay ahead if the landscapes and wildlife wealth of China are to be secured for future generations. With over 200 spectacular colour photographs, this book is a celebration of China's natural heritage.

John Mackinnon is a conservationist who has worked for over 30 years in Asia. His work in China included the preparation of the management plan for Giant Pandas and the setting up of several important reserves, and his books include A Photographic Guide to the Birds of China & Hong Kong (New Holland). Nigel Hicks is a trained biologist with many years' experience of the Far East. He is co-author with John Mackinnon of A Photographic Guide to the Birds of China & Hong Kong (New Holland).
