Introducing the basics of infrastructure design and construction, this textbook offers an primer on civil construction. From the initial bid to a megaproject’s final stages, this accessible guide to the construction manager’s role on a heavy civil construction jobsite is suitable for graduate, undergraduate students and professionals.
Introduction to Modern Infrastructure Construction serves as a pivotal resource in construction management education, focusing primarily on heavy civil construction and the newest technological innovations in this field. An essential textbook and tool for both academic and professional use, it thoroughly addresses critical topics including earthwork, highway planning, design, asphalt production, paving, recycling technology, and transportation asset management. It also delves into multiple aspects of infrastructure such as bridges, railways, airports, and pipelines, offering comprehensive insights beneficial to project management in these fields. Each chapter includes discussion questions or assignments to boost educational utility, and the text is augmented with lab practice appendices to reinforce practical application.

Authored by leading experts in the field George Wang, Jennifer Brandenburg, and Don Chen, Introduction to Modern Infrastructure Construction leverages their combined experience in academic teaching, research, and practical application. Their expertise provides readers with a unique blend of theoretical knowledge and real-world perspective, making this book an indispensable guide for anyone aspiring to excel in the field of infrastructure construction.

George Wang, PhD, PEng, F.ASCE, brings extensive professional experience across Australia, Canada, and the United States, with a long-standing career in both industry and academia. He currently holds the position of Gregory Poole Distinguished Professor of Construction Management at East Carolina University, where his teaching and research focus on infrastructure construction, sustainable technologies, and materials. Dr. Wang actively contributes to several technical committees, including those of ASCE, TRB, and ASTM, and is a lifetime member of ACCE. Jennifer Brandenburg is a professional engineer with over 35 years of experience in government transportation agencies and the private sector. She holds a civil engineering degree from North Carolina State University and has overseen numerous transportation infrastructure projects. Jennifer has also held senior management positions in the transportation industry and is currently an adjunct faculty member in the Construction Management program at East Carolina University. Don Chen, PhD, LEED, has more than 30 years of experience in the engineering field. He is a professor at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, teaching courses on Highway Design and Construction, Applied Analytics and Machine Learning, and Building Information Modeling (BIM). His research focuses on pavement performance evaluation and pavement management, emphasizing improving roadway network performance through local calibration, performance modeling, and deep learning.
