Updated to reflect the latest developments in this field, the Second Edition of Waste-to-Energy Technologies and Global Applications also adds three new chapters covering waste to hydrogen carbon capture and use and additional discussion WtE plants in Dubai and the Middle East.
Through waste-to-energy (WtE) technology, relevant WtE plants use waste as a renewable fuel to co-produce electricity, heating, and cooling for urban utilization. Updated to reflect the latest developments in this field, the second edition of Waste-to-Energy Technologies and Global Applications also adds three new chapters covering waste to hydrogen, carbon capture and storage/utilization, and additional discussion on new WtE plants in Dubai and the Middle East.

• Covers thermal treatment technologies including combustion, novel gasification, plasma gasification, and pyrolysis.

• Examines dozens of real-world WtE case studies from around the world, analyzing technical information behind planning, execution, goals, and national strategies.

• Explains financial and environmental aspects.

• Features new content on waste to hydrogen, carbon capture & storage/utilization, and new WtE plants in Dubai and the Middle East.

This book is aimed at professionals in environmental, chemical, energy, and related fields of engineering. It will also be of interest to policy making governmental authorities, construction companies, and financial institutions.

Efstratios Kalogirou is the co-founder and first chair of the Waste to Energy Research & Technology Council/WTERT Greece (Synergia). In addition, he was the first vice-chair of Global WTERT Council, headquartered in the Earth Engineering Center of Columbia University. The ISWA Working Group on Energy Recovery (ISWA-WGER) has made him a permanent member of their organization. He graduated from the Department of Chemical Engineering at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece. His PhD is from the National Technical University of Athens, School of Chemical Engineering. He is an international expert on waste management, specialized in state-of-the-art waste to energy (WtE) novel technologies. His major scientific fields are energy from waste, potable water resources, and ozone sterilization technologies. Many environmental projects worldwide (especially in WtE feasibility studies, preliminary studies, etc.) include his involvement. He has authored many scientific and technical papers, especially in WtE. Besides this, he coordinates worldwide intensive courses and seminars on advancing state-of-the-art sustainable waste management, and WtE as a renewable energy source in the framework of circular economy, all contributing to green development and carbon credits. These courses and seminars are done in close cooperation with local policy/decision makers, governmental authorities, industry, and universities. Since 2024, he has served as the technical director of Scandinavian ESG, with a focus in WtE projects in Africa and India.
