This volume introduces researchers to the idea of no-boundary thinking (NBT) in biological and biomedical research. Written by a team of specialists, drawing on their own experience, it provides a guide to integrating and synthesizing data and knowledge from bioinformatics to define important problems and articulate impactful research questions.
The volume and complexity of biological and biomedical research continues to grow exponentially with cutting-edge technologies such as high-throughput sequencing. Unfortunately, bioinformatics analysis is often considered only after data have been generated, which significantly limits the ability to make sense of complex big data. This unique book introduces the idea of No-Boundary Thinking (NBT) in biological and biomedical research, which aims to access, integrate, and synthesize data, information, and knowledge from bioinformatics to define important problems and articulate impactful research questions. This interdisciplinary volume brings together a team of bioinformatics specialists who draw on their own experiences with NBT to illustrate the importance of collaborative science. It will help stimulate discussion and application of NBT, and will appeal to all biomedical researchers looking to maximize their use of bioinformatics for making scientific discoveries.

Xiuzhen Huang is currently Professor and Research Scientist of the Department of Computational Biomedicine at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, USA. Before joining Cedars-Sinai Medical Center fall 2022, Xiuzhen was Professor in Computer Science at Arkansas State University for eighteen years. She founded the Arkansas Artificial Intelligence Campus (Arkansas AI-Campus). She also initiated the National AI-Campus, a landing project with No-Boundary Thinking. She completed her doctorate degree in computer science at Texas A&M University (2004). Jason H. Moore is Chair of the Department of Computational Biomedicine at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center (USA) where he also leads the Center for Artificial Intelligence Research and Education (CAIRE). He is a biomedical informaticist with a focus on AI and machine learning methodology for the study of human health. He has contributed to more than 600 publications in journals and books spanning the clinical and translational sciences, basic sciences, and data science and bioinformatics. He also serves as Editor-in-Chief of the journal BioData Mining. He is an elected Fellow of the American College of Medical Informatics and the American Statistical Association. Yu Zhang is Professor and Chair of the Department of Computer Science at Trinity University (USA). She is Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Agent Technologies and Systems and is in the editorial board of the SCS Transaction of Simulation. Her research falls within Agent-Based Modeling and Simulation. She received the Outstanding Service Award of the Society for Modeling and Simulation International (2013), Trinity Distinguish Junior Faculty Award (2008), Best Paper Award of the IEEE Region 5 Student Paper Competition (2008), and the IEEE Central Texas Chapter Service Recognition (2007).
