An overview of the biochemical basis of metabolic diseases and molecular basis of chemical pathologies. It highlights recent advances in diabetes mellitus (biochemical and nutritional aspects), lipids and lipoprotein metabolism disorders and dyslipidemias, biochemical aspects in mitochondrial disorders, dietary antioxidants and metabolic diseases.
This volume provides an overview of the biochemical basis of metabolic diseases and molecular basis of chemical pathologies. Metabolic disorders occur when metabolic processes in the body are disrupted. They contribute a significant burden to human health globally. They can be congenital or acquired, for example, diabetes mellitus, obesity, metabolic syndrome, osteoporosis, osteopenia, mild-moderate hypovitaminosis D, erectile dysfunction, dyslipidemia, and thyroiditis. Metabolic disorders have gained significant importance due to the exponential increase in obesity worldwide. Early diagnosis of metabolic disorders is important in order to employ lifestyle and risk factor modification.

Features:

An overview of the biochemical basis of metabolic diseases and molecular basis of chemical pathologies
Describes recent trends in diagnosis of metabolic disorders
Discusses management and treatment of metabolic diseases
Allows quick identification and retrieval of material by researchers learning the efficacy, associated dosage and toxicity of each of the classes of compounds
Suitable globally for graduate and postgraduate students studying metabolic diseases

Seth Kwabena Amponsah (PhD) is a Senior Lecturer and Head of Department of Medical Pharmacology, University of Ghana Medical School. He has an MPhil and PhD in Pharmacology. He has had post-doctoral fellowships under BANGA-Africa Project and BSU III (DANIDA - Denmark). He has over 12 years’ experience in teaching and research. His research focus includes Clinical Pharmacology (infectious disease and antimicrobial stewardship): prudent use of antimicrobials, antimicrobial level monitoring, and efficacy of antimicrobials in patients. He also has experience in population pharmacokinetic modeling; non-compartment pharmacokinetic estimation; and pharmacokinetic evaluation of new drug formulations. He has published over 50 research articles, 1 book, 10 book chapters and several conference abstracts. He is an academic editor for PLOS One and an Associate Editor for Pan African Medical Journal. Emmanuel Kwaku Ofori (PhD) is currently a Senior Lecturer and the Head of the Department of Chemical Pathology, University of Ghana Medical School. He earned his PhD in July 2018 from the University of Lausanne, in Switzerland. He teaches several disciplines in the health sciences (medical, nursing, veterinary, and laboratory sciences, among others). He has supervised and mentored many undergraduate and postgraduate students. His research focuses on lipidomics, metabolic medicine, and steroidal adaptations to diet and exercise. He has an overall aim of becoming an international expert on translational research into metabolic diseases. He has about 22 publications to his credit in top-ranked peer-reviewed journals. He has also presented several abstracts at international conferences. Yashwant V. Pathak (PhD) has over 15 years of experience in an Institution of Higher education as Dean, and over 30 years as faculty and as a researcher in higher education after his PhD. He currently holds the position of Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs and Tenured Professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences. Dr. Yashwant Pathak is an internationally recognized scholar, researcher and educator in the areas of health care education, nanotechnology, drug delivery systems and nutraceuticals. He has received many international and national awards including four Fulbright Fellowships, Endeavour Executive Fellowship by Australian Government, four outstanding faculty awards and he was selected as Fellow of American Association for Advancement of Science (AAAS) in 2021 for his contribution towards advancement of science. He has published over 350 research publications, reviews and chapters in various books. He has edited over 60 books in various fields including nanotechnology, nutraceuticals, conflict management and cultural studies. He is also actively involved with many non-profit organizations such as, Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh, USA, Sewa International USA, International accreditation council for Dharma Schools and Colleges, International commission for Human rights and religious freedom, and the Uberoi Foundation for religious studies, among others.
