Pattern Formation In Complex Dissipative Systems: Fluid Patterns, Liquid Crystals, Chemical Reactions
World Scientific Publishing Co Pte Ltd (Verlag)
978-981-02-0879-0 (ISBN)
In this volume, the problems of pattern formation in physics, chemistry and other related fields in complex and nonlinear dissipative systems are studied. Main subjects discussed are formation mechanisms, properties, statistics, characterization and dynamics of periodic and nonperiodic patterns in the electrohydrodynamics in liquid crystals, Rayleigh-Benard convection, crystallization, viscous fingering and Belouzov-Zhabotinsky chemical reaction. Recent developments in topological and defect-mediated chaos, chaos in systems with large degrees of freedom and turbulence-turbulence transitions are also discussed.
Pattern competition in Rayleigh-Benard convection - hexagons vs. rolls, G. Ahlers; convective patterns and transition to turbulence in nematic liquid crystals, L. Kramer; anomalous kinetic roughening, T. Vicsek; pattern formation in two Hele-Shaw systems - dielectric breakdown of liquids and electrodeposits, L. Lam; filaments in liquid crystals - structure and dynamics, P. Palffy-Muhoray; a simple model for the networks of bursting neurons, Y. Kuramoto; topological defects and mechanism of transition to weak turbulence, V. Steinberg; local bifurcations, defects in the convection of nematics, R. Ribotta; transport and energy dissipation in chaotic dynamical systems, H. Mori; turbulence in a box, A. Libchaber; experimental investigations of the spatio-temporal chaos and of the wave propagation in a one-dimensional extended system, Y. Couder; structure and spatio-temporal disorder of capillary waves excited parametrically by noise, M.I. Rabinovich; relative stability in single and multiple variable chemical systems, J. Ross; coupled pattern generators in lateral inhibition media, M. Mimura; (part contents).
