The "Biographisch-literarisches Handwörterbuch der exakten Naturwissenschaften" (Concise Biographic-Literary Dictionary of the Exact Sciences) was first published in 1863 by Johann Christian Poggendorff. In the meantime, the dictionary contains biographic and literary data on around 29,000 natural scientists and is thus unique in its comprehensiveness.
This database has been finalized in 2004 and contains the unabridged contents of all the subvolumes, and all the entries are hyperlinked. Comfortable search functions in English allow the user to look for people, places of birth and death, years, and subject areas, to name but a few examples. The pages from the original edition can be accessed from each individual entry.
