He earned his PhD degree in Environmental Engineering at Cornell University, United States, and his BS Chemistry and MS Environmental Chemistry degrees from Nanjing University, China. He has an extensive list of publications in the field of environmental science and engineering. Prof. Gao has received numerous professional honors including Fulbright Distinguished Scholar, SSSA Fellow, Web of Science Highly Cited Researcher, and NSF CAREER Award.
