This book opens the door to the frequently obscure world of scientific discovery, not just to document discoveries, but also to explain how these discoveries come about. As an example, it tells, in an accessible way, the exciting story of the important discovery of a protein called RANKL, which led to the development of a drug therapy that is used worldwide to treat osteoporosis, cancer and other diseases. The story will be of interest to informed laypersons, students, and people with osteoporosis.

Professor David M. Findlay is a biomedical scientist, working at the University of Adelaide, Australia. He completed a BSc at the University of Melbourne, followed by postgraduate research leading to MSc and PhD degrees at the same university. He undertook postdoctoral studies at the National Institutes of Health in Maryland, USA, and was appointed Professor of Orthopaedic Research at the University of Adelaide in 2004. He has researched in the fields of endocrinology, diabetes and bones, and is now focused on understanding the pathology of bones and joints, at the cell and molecular levels, in diseases of the skeleton that include osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, and cancers involving bones. He has published over 250 peer-reviewed scientific papers, book chapters and review articles, covering a broad range of topics within the musculoskeletal field.
