This book gathers the proceedings of the EPPM 2019 conference, and highlights innovative work by researchers and practitioners active in various industries around the globe. Recent advances in science and technology have made it possible to seamlessly connect and integrate various elements of engineering systems, and opened the door for innovations that have transformed how we live and work. While these developments have yielded enhanced efficiency and numerous improvements in our current practices, the problems caused by the increased complexity of these integrated systems can be extremely difficult.

Accordingly, solving these problems involves applying cross-disciplinary expertise to address the heterogeneity of the various elements inherent in the system. These proceedings address four main themes: (I) Smart and Sustainable Construction, (II) Advances in Project Management Practices, (III) Toward Safety and Productivity Improvement, and (IV) Smart Manufacturing, Design, andLogistics. As such, they will be of interest to and valuable to researchers and practitioners in a range of industries seeking an update on the translational fields of engineering, project, and production management.

Dr. Kriengsak Panuwatwanich is an Associate Professor and Head of the School of Civil Engineering and Technology, Sirindhorn International Institute of Technology (SIIT), Thammasat University, Thailand. Prior to joining the SIIT, he was a Senior Lecturer and Program Director at Griffith School of Engineering, Griffith University, in Australia. He also served as Chairman of the Engineers Australia Gold Coast Regional Group (2014). Dr. Panuwatwanich holds a B.Eng. in Civil Engineering from the SIIT, M.Eng.Sc. from the University of New South Wales, and Ph.D. from Griffith University. His research interests include engineering and construction management, with a specific focus on the applications of digital technologies in construction, safety and innovation management, as well as sustainability. He has published over 30 journal papers and 50 conference papers, and is a regular reviewer for top-tier journals such as Automation in Construction, Engineering Construction and Architectural Management, and Safety Science. He currently serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Engineering, Project, and Production Management, and as Editor (Production Engineering) for the journal Engineering Management in Production and Services. Dr. Panuwatwanich has received excellence in teaching and research awards from Griffith University and the SIIT, as well as the Emerald Literati Network and International Water Association. Dr. Chien-Ho Ko received a B.S. in Construction Engineering from National Taiwan Institute of Technology and an M.S. and Ph.D. in Construction Management from National Taiwan University of Science and Technology. A Registered Professional Engineer of Fire Protection, he has previously served as a construction officer, second lieutenant, managing design–build projects for military dependents at the Ministry of National Defense. He then pursued his postdoctoral research at the University of California at Berkeley, exploring lean construction with Dr. Iris D. Tommelein and Dr. Glenn Ballard. Dr. Ko began his academic career as an Assistant Professor, and was promoted to Associate and Full Professor of Civil Engineering at National Pingtung University of Science and Technology. He spent his sabbatical leave at MIT as a Visiting Scholar. Chien-Ho Ko has been conferred numerous academic awards, including best paper, outstanding professor, research, and teaching awards. He has published over 40 refereed journal papers and 70 conference papers. He also has participated as Principal Investigator in over 40 research projects funded e.g. by the National Science Council. Additionally, he is an inventor, with more than 30 patents in the US, Taiwan, and PR China. Dr. Ko is a reviewer for more than 30 different journals, serves on the editorial boards of 20 more, and is the current Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Engineering, Project, and Production Management.
