Haematology provides a broad-ranging overview of the study of blood, from its physiology to the key pathophysiological states that can arise. It demonstrates throughout how the physiology underpins the key investigations carried out by a biomedical scientist, forging a clear link between science and practice.
Biomedical Scientists are the foundation of modern healthcare, from cancer screening to diagnosing HIV, from blood transfusion for surgery to food poisoning and infection control. Without Biomedical Scientists, the diagnosis of disease, the evaluation of the effectiveness of treatment, and research into the causes and cures of disease would not be possible.

The Fundamentals of Biomedical Science series has been written to reflect the challenges of practicing Biomedical Science today. It draws together essential basic science with insights into laboratory practice to show how an understanding of the biology of disease is coupled to the analytical approaches that lead to diagnosis. Assuming only a minimum of prior knowledge, the series reviews the full range of disciplines to which a Biomedical Scientist may be exposed - from microbiology to cytopathology to transfusion science.

Haematology provides a broad-ranging overview of the study of blood, the dynamic fluid that interfaces with all organs and tissues to meditate essential transport and regulatory functions. Written with the needs of the Biomedical Scientist centre-stage, it provides a firm grounding in the physiology of blood, and the key pathophysiological states that can arise. It demonstrates throughout how an understanding of physiology underpins the key investigations carried out by a Biomedical Scientist to forge a clear link between science and practice.

The third edition has been thoroughly revised to remain up to date with the latest scientific research, with new sections and case studies added to support your learning. The online resources to accompany Haematology have also been updated and include multiple choice questions to test understanding, a Journal Club which provides discussion questions for relevant research papers, and answers to case study and self-check questions. Students and lecturers will also have access to the FBMS series online resources, which feature video interviews with practicing biomedical scientists and 'in the lab' footage showing biomedical techniques.

Also available as an ebook with functionality, navigation features, and links that offer extra learning support.

Gary Moore is Director of Clinical Diagnostic Research for Technoclone, Honorary Consultant Biomedical Scientist for the Specialist Haemostasis Unit at Addenbrooke's Hospital, and Visiting Professor in the Faculty of Science and Technology at Middlesex University. He received his BSc degree in Biomedical Science from the University of Greenwich and was the first recipient of the Doctor of Biomedical Science degree, from the University of Portsmouth. He is a Fellow and Life Member of the IBMS, Fellow of the Royal Society of Biology, Chartered Scientist and Chartered Biologist. He has published papers and reviews on diagnostic haemostasis, his main area of interest being antiphospholipid antibody detection, and has co-authored guidelines on diagnostic testing in haemostasis. He is a co-chair for the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis, Scientific Sub-Committee on Plasma Coagulation Inhibitors and peer reviewer for international journals of haematology and haemostasis/thrombosis. Gavin Knight is a Principal Lecturer in Haematology, Course Leader for the IBMS and Royal Society of Biology accredited BSc Biomedical Science course, Programme Leader for the Biomedical Sciences area and Technology Enhanced Learning lead for the School of Pharmacy & Biomedical Sciences. His area of specialist academic interest focuses on the haematological malignancies and the molecular mechanisms underpinning their behaviour. Gavin is a passionate, innovative, educator who favours the use of active learning approaches in Higher Education, with particular emphasis on problem-based and collaborative learning methodologies. Gavin is the recipient of a number of student-led teaching awards and has extensive experience of external examining for IBMS accredited courses. Gavin is the Deputy Chief Examiner for the IBMS Haematology Advisory Panel, is an HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist and holds Fellowship of the IBMS, Senior Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy and is a chartered scientist. Prior to his appointment as Editor of the British Journal of Biomedical Science, Andrew Blann was a Consultant Clinical Scientist at the City Hospital, Birmingham with Hon. Senior Lecturer appointments at Birmingham University Medical School and the University of Wolverhampton. He received his PhD in vascular biology from the University of Manchester, and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Pathology, the Institute of Biomedical Science, The Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, and the Royal Society of Statistics. Other textbooks include Data Handing and Analysis (Oxford University Press), Blood Science (Wiley Blackwell) and Routine Blood Results Explained (M&K Updates).
