Environmental pollution with toxic metals has become a global phenomenon. Because of the growing apprehension about the potential effects of the metallic contaminants on various fauna and flora, the research on fundamental, applied and health aspects of trace metals in the environment has mushroomed to the point that it has become difficult to keep track of recent developments in particular fields. This book is the first volume of a new series Trace Metals in the Environment and provides a current overview of heavy metals in water, air and soil. The book begins with an overview of the origins of metals as a result of the atmosphere and gives a breakdown of the deposits on European land surfaces. The effect of atmospheric deposition and acidification is detailed with respect to its impact on soil plant interactions and changes in the soil composition in general. The occurrence and impact of metals in aquatic systems and their effects on marine life is well reviewed with examples being drawn from metals in some Chinese rivers as well as the North Sea.

1. Atmospheric transport: large scale transport, models. European inventory of trace metal emissions to the atmosphere (J.M. Pacyna, J. Munch and F. Axenfeld). 2. Acid deposition and soil acidification The impact of atmospheric acid deposition on soil and vegetation (R. Mayer). Impact of soil acidification on the mobility of metals in the soil-plant system (E. Lobersli, E. Gjengedal and E. Steinnes). 3. Soil Interaction . Assessment of ecotoxicological risk of accumulated metals in soils with the help of chemical methods standardized through biological tests (S.K. Gupta). The effect of addition of bauxite refining residue (red mud) on the behavior of heavy metals in compost (H. Hofstede and G. Ho). 4. Regional Studies: Freshwater and marine environment . The regulation of heavy metal concentrations in natural aquatic systems (P.W. Schindler). Geographical tendency of geochemical characteristics and binding capacity of suspended matter from five main rivers of east China for heavy metals (J.S. Chen, C.Q. Cheng and F.Y. Wang). Particulate trace metals in surface waters of the North Sea (M. Kersten, G. Irion and U. Forstner). 5. Bio-accumulation . Biological availability of metals in sediments: analytical approaches (P.G.C. Campbell and A. Tessier). Synthesis of mercury contamination mechanisms of a burrowing Mayfly Hexagenia rigida : methodological bases and principal results (E. Saouter, F. Ribeyre and A. Boudou). 6. Microbial adaptation and microbial interactions . Effects of heavy metals and selenium on mercury methylation and other microbial activities in freshwater sediments (T.A. Jackson). 7. Health effects of metals . Health effects of the workers exposed to airborne lead (M.M. Orlov, N.M. Mladinic, P.I. Kulic, D.Z. Dolinac, M.N. Dubravcic and L.B. Kurajica). 8. Radionuclides as chronometers and tracers . Radioisotopes as tracers for the interactions between trace elements, colloids and particles in natural waters (P.H. Santschi and B.D. Honeyman). Stable lead and 210 Pb in German lake sediments and soils: a tracer for anthropogenic lead emission (H. Dorr, A. Mangini, W. Schmitz, F. Weber and K.O. Munnich). Variation in radionuclide loss rates from Baltic Mytilus edulis (H. Dahlgaard). History of mercury contamination reconstructed from high-resolution radio-isotopic dating of sediment cores in Lake Geneva (J. Dominik, J.L. Loizeau, P.-Y. Favarger, J.-P. Vernet and R.L. Thomas). 9. Freshwater . Formation of surface complexes between heavy metals and sludge (C.-T. Tien and C.P. Huang). Kinetics of heavy metal adsorption on sludge particulate (C.-T. Tien and C.P. Huang). Removal of heavy metals by fungal Aspergillus oryzae adsorption (J.-P. Huang, C.P. Huang and A. Morehart). Trace metal attenuation resulting from in-situ degradation of sanitary landfill leachate (R.J. Scrudato and J.J. Pagano). 10. Analytical and general methods . Analysis of the binding heterogeneity of natural ligands using adsorption data (M.M. Nederlof, W.H.
