This book explores new experimental phase diagrams of non-oxide ceramics, with a particular focus on the silicon nitride, silicon carbide and aluminum nitride, as well as the ultra-high temperature ceramic (UHTC) systems. It features more than 80 experimental phase diagrams of these non-oxide ceramics, including three phase diagrams of UHTC systems, constructed by the authors. Physical chemistry data covering the period since the 1970s, collected by the author Z.K.Huang, is presented in six tables in the appendixes.

It also includes 301 figures involving about 150 material systems. Most of the phase diagrams have been selected from the ACerS-NIST database with copyright permission. The book methodically presents numerous diagrams previously scattered in various journals and conferences worldwide. Providing extensive experimental data, it is a valuable reference resource on ceramics development and design for academic researchers, R&D engineers and graduate students.

Dr. Zhenkun Huang is a senior research scientist focusing on non-oxide ceramics phase equilibrium and crystal chemistry. He earned his BSc. (1960) in Materials Science at Nanjing Institute of Chemical Engineering and his Ph.D. (1965) in physical chemistry at Shanghai Institute of Ceramics, Chinese Academy of Sciences. He was the head of the Phase Equilibrium Study Group from 1977 to 1991, and the deputy director of the State Key Lab of High Performance Ceramics at Shanghai Institute of Ceramics, Chinese Academy of Sciences from 1989 to 1991. He became a professor at Shanghai Institute of Ceramics in 1990, and he visited the Laboratory of Powder Metallurgy, Max-Planck Institute of Metallurgy, Stuttgart, Germany as an exchange researcher in 1980-1982. As part of the joint Chinese Academy of Sciences(CAS)and American Sciences Foundation(ASF) research program he worked as a visiting research scientist at the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI, U.S.A. in 1984-1985, 1987-1988 and 1992-2002. He has also a visiting professor at the School of Material Science and Engineering, Beifang University of Nationalities (BUN) since 2003. He has discovered more than 20 new chemical compounds and presented the phase equilibrium diagrams of 30 physic-chemical systems. He has written 50 scientific publications and obtained a patent (U.S. Patent No. 6,124,225) with Prof. Tien Tsengying. He was awarded the first prize of Science and Technology Progress issued by the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1987 as part of the phase equilibrium study group, and the first prize of Natural Sciences issued by Chinese Natural Science Foundation, in 1997 with the members of phase equilibrium study group. He also received the “Liupan Mountain Friendship Award” issued by the People’s Government of Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region in 2010.   Laner Wu is a senior professor of the School of Materials Science and Engineering at theBeifang University of Nationalities (BUN). She is the head of the Key Laboratory of Powders and Advanced Ceramics, Ningxia Province, China. Her research focuses on non-oxide ceramics phase equilibrium and processing and she has written more than 70 technical papers and holds 10 authorized Chinese patents. She received the Ningxia Science & Technology Award in 1986 and 2006, the Special Allowance Experts of the State Award in 2004, and an award for Outstanding Contributions in 2007 and 2008. She was honored as a distinguished teacher of Ningxia in 2009 and the “Saishangyingcai” Award of Ningxia in 2013.
