This book highlights computationally enabled and digitally fabricated strategies used in the design of a series of full-size wooden structures. It introduces theoretical foundations and then focuses on the possibilities that have emerged as a result of the material-aware processes. The case studies expound wood as one of the most suitable materials to experience the seamless framework introduced with the digital design-to-construction chain. Two main aspects of the pavilions constructed, developed in various international academic groups, are considered. On one hand the case studies explore tolerances of raw and engineered material intertwined with machine processing; they also address material enhancement through strip applications in timber construction. In addition, the structures are examined in the light of an extensible designing path, which acts as an interoperable procedure, bridging the virtual and the real.

Andrea Quartara graduated summa cum laude in the Architecture Master program of Genoa (Italy) in July 2013. He is an Italian Licensed Architect and a PhD from the Department of Architecture and Design (UNIGE). During the PhD course, he took part in international research courses and workshops. He published chapters in edited books (e.g. Springer Italia) and papers in scientific magazine (e.g Pasajes de Arquitectura y Cr?tica) as well as in conference proceedings (e.g. 35th eCAADe).

Djordje Stanojevic is an architect expert in digital and robotic fabrication. Master in Integrative technologies and architectural design research ITECH. He worked for the Institute for Computational Design (ICD) at the Robotic Manufacturing Laboratory. Djordje taught at the Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC) as Digital Fabrication and Computational Design Expert, currently he is running as co-founder the office ME-ST and at the same time having a position as professor at the School of Architecture CEDIM.
