This book provides a comprehensive introduction to the analysis of subsidence in sedimentary basins. It presents BasinVis 2.0, a MATLAB-based program for visualizing the three types of subsidence with 1D/2D plots and 3D models. Subsidence analysis yields a graphic representation of the vertical movement of a stratigraphic horizon with respect to a datum in a sedimentary basin, while subsidence history offers valuable insights into basin-forming mechanisms, including tectonics, sedimentation, loading effects, sea-level changes, and thermal events.

The authors discuss the three types of basin subsidence: total subsidence, tectonic subsidence, and thermal subsidence. The total subsidence is calculated using a decompaction technique based on appropriate porosity-depth trends, while the tectonic subsidence is calculated by means of a backstripping technique removing sedimentary load, and paleobathymetry effects. Multiple types of data indicating thermal effects are used to calculate thermal subsidence. Each subsidence analysis is presented using sample data acquired from various types of basins.

Given its breadth of coverage, this book will benefit all researchers and postgraduate students in the earth sciences interested in sedimentary basins, especially sedimentologists and basin analysts. Researchers in the petroleum industry interested in the evolution of sedimentary basins, as well as developers working for scientific software related fields of earth science, will also find it a valuable resource.

Dr. Lee is currently a postdoctoral researcher at the Department of Geodynamics and Sedimentology, University of Vienna, and has been working in the field of basin analysis and modeling for over nine years. This includes her master and doctoral studies, during which she produced several industry reports, and a number of conference presentations. She has especially studied the subsidence history of the northwest shelf of Australia as a shipboard and post-cruise scientist with the International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Expedition 356 Indonesian Throughflow.

Eun Young Lee has conducted multiple research projects in the field of ‘basin analysis and modelling’ in Korea, Austria and Australia. The projects have applied various research techniques including subsidence analysis to understand basin architecture and evolution. She was a shipboard scientist of International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Expedition 356 and Expedition 369, and is currently conducting projects to understand sedimentary basins, offshore Western Australia.Johannes Novotny is a specialist in scientific visualization and has participated in geological and medical research projects in Austria and the United States. Recently he has explored the use of virtual reality systems in scientific data analysis.Michael Wagreich has worked as a sedimentologist and stratigrapher in academy. He has conducted several research projects on basin analysis and basin modelling, especially using subsidence analysis. Other recent research focuses on past sea-level changes and the Anthropocene.
