Describes fundamental and applied research into the clinical use of electrochemical oxidation as a detoxification method. Topics covered include the electrochemical regeneration of dialysate in artificial kidneys and electrochemical oxidation in the simulation of liver mono-oxygenase function.
Physicochemical medicine is a rapidly developing field in theoretical and applied medical science lying at the interface of biophysics, biochemistry, bio-organic chemistry, molecular biology, genetics, immunology and biotechnology. This work describes fundamental and applied research into the clinical use of electrochemical oxidation as a detoxification method. Topics covered include the electrochemical regeneration of dialysate in artificial kidneys and electrochemical oxidation in the simulation of liver mono-oxygenase function. A portable artificial kidney designed by the authors in which the dialysate is regenerated electrochemically has undergone clinical trials.

Part 1 Electrochemical oxidation in the simulation of liver mono-oxygenase function: direct oxidation in model solutions; direct oxidation in biologic fluids; direct oxidation in animal models of disease. Part 2 Indirect electrochemical oxidation using carriers of active oxygen: oxidation of toxic and ballast substances in model solutions; oxidation of toxic and ballast substances in blood plasma; oxidation in animal models of disease; bactericidal effect of sodium hypochlorite-mediated oxidation. Part 3 Electrochemical regeneration of dialysate in artificial kidneys.
