This book presents the latest advances in mapping the geological structures and modeling the geodynamical and petrological processes in the Hoggar shield and adjacent areas of the northeast West African Craton, which is home to the oldest rocks in Algeria. Its respective chapters discuss the structural geology, geophysical methods, igneous processes, metamorphic petrology and metallogeny.
The mapping and modeling are based on satellite data and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), so the mapping ranges from continental to crystalline scale and the ages range from 3.2 Ga to the recent Cenozoic. Further, various types of commercial and open source software (partially developed by the authors) were used.
Gathering papers by respected experts in the methods applied and the Algerian Precambrian domain, the book offers a valuable reference guide to a range of mapping and modeling methodologies, as well as a geological and geophysical description of the Hoggar shield and the northeast West African Craton.
Prof. Dr. Mohamed Hamoudi is a Full Professor of Geomapping and Remote Sensing at the Department of Geology at the "Université des Sciences et de la Technologie Houari Boumediene" in Algiers, Algeria, and a visiting scientist at the GFZ Potsdam, Germany. Prof. Mohamed has published over 30 articles in international, peer-reviewed ISI journals. Prof. Dr. Khadidja Ouzegane is a Full Professor at the "Faculté des Sciences de la Terre, de l'Aménagement du Territoire et de la Géographie" at the "Université des Sciences et de la Technologie Houari Boumediene" in Algiers, Algeria. Professor Ouzegane has contributed to research on the nature and evolution of continental crust, geochemistry and distribution of rare earth elements in carbonatites, and the application of mineral equilibria modeling techniques to investigate metamorphic processes in Archean and Precambrian rocks in Hoggar (southern Algeria). She has published over 30 articles in international, peer-reviewed ISI journals. Prof. Dr. Jean-Louis Bodinier is the Head of the department "Geosciences Montpellier" at the University Montpellier 2. He has extensive experience in researching the structure, composition and evolution of the continental lithospheric mantle, and easthenosphere-lithosphere interactions (metasomatism, igneous refertilization and thermo-chemical erosion) based on mantle rocks studies (massifs and inclusions in lavas). His research interests also focus on (1) the distribution of trace elements in the Earth's mantle, from the sub-mineral scale (microphases) to geochemical reservoirs and (2) the simulation of geochemical fractionation and isotopic decoupling related to magma transport and melt-rock interactions in the upper mantle. He has published more than 80 articles in international, peer-reviewed ISI journals.
