A young girl is abducted aboard a boat bound upstream on an Indonesian river, a landscape scarred by pollution and consumerism. But it is also a place from which she herself is indigenous, and if she can root herself back into its landscape and languages, she may yet save herself.
A young girl is abducted and smuggled aboard a boat bound upstream on an Indonesian river, through a landscape scarred by ecological destruction and historical greed. As her captors take her ever deeper into the jungle, her uncertain fate is compounded by the sense of her environment as a place of violence, destruction and jeopardy. But it is also a place from which she herself is indigenous, and if she can root herself back into its landscape and languages, she may yet save herself. Khairani Barokka addresses issues of pollution, consumerism, and habitat destruction with a poet's sensibility, and her frenetic neon artwork, inspired by contemporary glitch artists while also incorporating traditional motifs, aims to overturn our ideas of the jungle as a place of threatening darkness. Indigenous Species is also a bold and necessary experiment in making a sight-impaired-accessible art book: Tilted Axis is producing a separate edition which will feature Braille alongside text for sighted readers, and tactile, embossed imagery.

Khairani Barokka is the author of Indigenous Species. She is a writer, poet, and artist in London. Among her honors, she was an NYU Tisch Departmental Fellow for her Masters, Emerging Writers Festival's (AUS) Inaugural International Writer-In-Residence, and Indonesia's first Writer-In-Residence at Vermont Studio Center. Okka is the writer/performer/producer of, among others, a deaf-accessible, solo spoken word/art show, "Eve and Mary Are Having Coffee". It premiered at Edinburgh Fringe 2014 as Indonesia's only representative, with a grant from HIVOS. She was recognized in 2014 by UNFPA as one of Indonesia's "Inspirational Young Leaders Driving Social Change" for "raising awareness of disability through inclusive arts", and has been awarded six residencies, with a seventh upcoming. Published internationally in anthologies and journals, Okka has also presented work extensively, in nine countries, is co-editor HEAT, an anthology of Southeast Asian urban writing (Buku Fixi Publishing, 2016), and a PhD-by-practice candidate at Goldsmiths, as an LPDP Scholar in Visual Cultures.
