This marvelous book, borne of a unique collaboration between Dr. Allen Schoena world-renowned veterinarian and authorand trainer and competitor of many years Susan Gordon, introduces the 25 Principles of Compassionate Equitation. These Principles, conceived by Dr. Schoen and Gordon, are a set of developmental guidelines, encouraging a level of personal awareness that may be enacted not only through the reader's engagement with horses, but can be extended to all humans and sentient beings he or she encounters. The 25 Principles share stories and outline current, peer-reviewed studies that identify and support methods of training, handling, and caring for horses that constitute a safe, healthy, non-stressful, and pain-free environment. Through their Compassionate Equestrian program, the authors encourage all involved in the horse industry to approach training and handling with compassion and a willingness to alleviate suffering. By developing deeper compassion for their own horses, and subsequently, all equines, equestrians transcend their differences in breed preferences, riding disciplines, and training methodologies. This leads to the ability to empathize and connect more closely with the global collective of horses and horse people. In doing so, a worldwide community of compassionate equine practitioners and horse owners will emerge, which will not only benefit the horses: People involved with horses are found in many influential segments of society and have the potential to affect wide circles of friends, acquaintances, and co-workers from every walk of life. These are simple changes any horse person can make that can have a vast impact on the horse industry and society as a whole.

Susan Gordon was a professional hunter-jumper trainer from 1983 to 2009. She retired from training and teaching in 2009 and founded Green Pony Productions for the production of digital media content relating to social-justice issues for horses. In2012 she began blogging, and most recently she turned to full-time writing to bring principles of The Compassionate Equestrian” to a community of horse-lovers who need answers in a changing world, and an equestrian industry that's become a confusing array of philosophies and training methods as we've become globally connected via social media (thecompassionateequestrian.com). Dr. Allen Schoen, DVM, MS, PhD (Hon) is one of the pioneers in veterinary acupuncture and natural therapies, developing and practicing them since 1981. He has been acknowledged worldwide for introducing the concept of an integrative approach to veterinary medicine, bridging the gap between conventional and alternative medicine. With over 30 years of clinical experience, teaching and research, he has developed his own unique integrative approach to animal health care. He received his DVM from Cornell University's College of Veterinary Medicine in 1978, holds a Masters Degree in Neurophysiology and Animal Behavior from the University of Illinois, is certified in Veterinary Acupuncture, and has advanced training in botanical medicine and homeopathy. His extensive clinical experience with complementary therapies, combined with an interest in the latest research, led to his editing the two principle veterinary textbooks on these modalities: Veterinary Acupuncture: Ancient Art to Modern Medicine, and Complementary & Alternative Veterinary Medicine: Principles and Practice (co-edited with Susan Wynn, DVM). In his effort to reach the general public, he wrote the books Love, Miracles, and Animal Healing (with Pam Proctor) and Kindred Spirits: How the Remarkable Bond Between Humans and Animals Can Change the Way We Live.
