A geology textbook on igneous petrology encompasssing geophysics and geochemistry in the study of igneous rocks. The author has reviewed the processes involved in present-day magma generation and their relationship to global tectonic processes.
This geology textbook on igneous petrology encompasses geophysics and geochemistry in the study of igneous rocks. The main objective in writing this book was to review the processes involved in present-day magma generation and their relationship to global tectonic processes since, in the author's opinion, these are fundamental to the understanding of the petrogenesis of ancient volcanic and plutonic sequences, the original tectonic setting of which may have been obscured by subsequent deformation and metamorphism. Wilson has tended to focus on volcanic rocks from those recently active provinces for which we have the most comprehensive geochemical data sets. She provides discussion of the major-element, trace-element and radiogenic isotope characteristics of magmas generated in different tectonic settings and she deals with the information derived from such data concerning magma source regions and the processes modifying primary mantle-derived magmas during their ascent through the earth's lithosphere. Additionally, each chapter contains a summary of geophysical data relating to crustal and mantle structure and the location of magma storage reservoirs.
The work should appeal to the more advanced undergraduate and beginning postgraduate students as well as their teachers who already have a basic foundation in pretrological principles.

Part 1 Magmatism and global tectonic processes: relation of present-day magmatism to global tectonic processes; geochemical characteristics of igneous rocks as petrogenetic indicators; partial melting processes in the earth's upper mantle; processes which modify the compositions of primary magmas. Part 2 Magmatism at constructive plate margins: mid-ocean ridges. Part 3 Magmatism at destructive plate margins: island arcs; active continental margins; back-arc basins. Part 4 Magmatism within plates: oceanic intra-plate volcanism; continental tholeiitic flood basalt provinces; continental rift zone magmatism; potassic magmatism within continental plates. Appendix: approximate ranges of D values for the partitioning of trace elements between the common rock-forming minerals and liquids of basic-intermediate composition.
