A study of the eyes of all kinds of fishes, describing their anatomy, function, the construction of the fish eye, how images are focused on the retina and its response to images. It also includes surveys of visual characteristics and abilities, and of adaptations to special aquatic environments.
This work attempts to bring together the body of information available about the structure and function of the eyes of fishes. It surveys the eyes of all kinds of fishes including lampreys, sharks and bony fishes. It describes the anatomy, function and the construction of the fish eye, the way in which images are focused on the retina and the response of the retina to these images. The anatomical descriptions are accompanied by functional interpretations made in the light of current research. The book also includes surveys of visual characteristics and abilities and of adaptations to special aquatic environments. The author has attempted to correlate features of the eye with photoconditions and behaviour, for example light intensities, spectrum composition, luminescence, depth preference, pelagic, benthic and amphibious modes of life, diurnality and nocturnality. The work is intended to be of value to scientists carrying out research on eyes and vision, those interested in the sense organs and to fisheries biologists.
