Published by the American Geophysical Union as part of the Antarctic Research Series, Volume 42.
By the end of the 1960s the Ross Ice Shelf was already one of the better explored regions in Antarctica, yet glaciological and geophysical measurements had been limited largely to studies at Little America, the International Geophysical Year traverse lop around the shelf, and an L-shaped movement survey. Consequently, when plans were being made for drilling an access hole to the ocean beneath the interior of the shelf, it was decided to conduct an airlifted survey covering the entire ice shelf: the Ross Ice Shelf Geophysical and Glaciological Curvey (RIGGS).

Charles Raymond Bentley was an American glaciologist and geophysicist, born in Rochester, New York. He was a professor emeritus at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Mount Bentley and the Bentley Subglacial Trench in Antarctica are named after him. Dennis E. Hayes is the editor of The Ross Ice Shelf: Glaciology and Geophysics, published by Wiley.
