For over a quarter of a century the renowned documentary photographer Ragnar Axelsson has been venturing out with farmers rounding up sheep in Fjallabak, one of the most extraordinary natural wonders in the sub-polar Arctic, under all kinds of conditions - snowstorms, downpours and sunlit skies. In this wilderness, cascades of rhyolite scree, hot springs, glacial ice and mineral green slopes create a peculiar interplay between light and surface. Ragnar Axelsson has created a magnificent photographic collection that archives an Arctic people's struggle with the whims of nature, and portrays the social changes that have gradually eroded their age-old traditions. Against this surreal landscape, the people appear as visitors to a strange world. They've left their daily existence behind to become itinerants in the realm of myth where the past and present are no longer distinguishable.
Ragnar 'Rax' Axelsson has worked as an international photojournalist for the past three decades. Highly acclaimed, he has been honoured as Icelandic Photographer of the Year on four occasions. His work in Greenland, Iceland, the Faroe Islands and Siberia has appeared across a range of print media, such as Stern, The New York Times, Le Figaro, Newsweek, Time and National Geographic. 'Rax' has exhibited at art expositions and museums throughout Europe and the U.S. Behind the Mountains is Ragnar Axelsson's third book. His previous books; Faces of the North (2004) and Last Days of the Arctic (2010 & 2013) have been exceptionally well received. The latter was accompanied by a BBC documentary and was named one of the best photography books by the UK's Sunday Times and Germany's Die Welt.
