These proceedings give an overview of the biology of haemotopoietic progenitor cells, peripheral stem cell transplantation in patients with haemotological malignancies, developments in molecular diagnosis and gene therapeutic concepts.
Blood stem cell transplantation has become an established therapeutic option in the treatment of malignant diseases. At the same time molecular therapeutic options (such as gene therapy) are promising alternatives to the classical treatment of cancer. These proceedings give an overview of the biology of haemotopoietic progenitor cells, peripheral stem cell transplantation in patients with haemotological malignancies, developments in molecular diagnosis and gene therapeutic concepts, and show that successful future developments require co-operative research connecting basic science with clinical application.

Mobilization and selection of CD34+cells; autologous stem cell transplantation for chronic myeloid leukaemia; autologous stem cell transplantation in aggressive non-Hodgkin's lymphoma; peripheral blood progenitor cell transplantation; molecular monitoring of residual disease in chronic myelogenous leukaemia patients after therapy; delineation of genomic regions; molecular cytogenetic analysis of low-grade C-cell neoplasias; applications of gene transfer; dendritic cells for somatic gene therapy; construction of immunogenic tumour cell surfaces; adeno-associated virus type 2 vector; protection of haemotopoietic stem cells; regulated gene expression after retroviral vector; specific bcr-abl-directed Antisende nucleic acids and ribozymes; the use of ribozymes in gene therapy approaches to AIDS.
