This introductory text covers the principles of marine biology, including marine organisms and their ecological interactions, and the role of ocean mechanisms and marine organisms in maintaining global stability. In addition this book covers the following aspects more completely than most texts: (1) an expanded view of the whole earth and the human role in it, including global warming, UV damage to marine systems via ozone depletion, and possible Gaia feedback mechanisms; (2) fisheries, a topic that is essential to understanding the human/sea relationship but has been traditionally ignored by marine biologists, (3) a much better treatment of marine life in the geologic past.
PART I: THE GLOBAL OCEANS 1. Geographic and Geologic Features of the World's Oceans 2. Moving Ocean Waters and Their Relationship to Life PART II: LIVING IN SEAWATER 3. The Responses of Organisms to Sea Temperature, Salinity, and Dissolved Gases 4. Uses of Underwater Light and Sound 5. Adaptations to the Weight and Density of Water PART III: THE MARINE ORGANISMS 6. Bacteria, Protists, Plants, and Fungi 7. Invertebrate Animals in the Sea 8. The Marine Vertebrates I: Fishes, Sharks, and Kin 9. The Marine Vertebrates II: Birds, Reptiles, and Mammals PART IV: MARINE ECOLOGY 10. Populations, Communities, and Ecosystems 11. Energy in Ecosystems 12. The Movements of Materials Through Ecosystems 13. Communities and Ecology of the Offshore Oceans 14. Life in Shallow Water 15. Stability and Change in Marine Communities 16. Long-Term Change in Communities PART V: THE HUMAN IMPACT ON THE SEA 17. Additions of Materials to the Oceans 18. Changing the Oceans by Harvesting Organisms 19.
