Light Emitting Silicon for Microphotonics offers fascinating insight the state-of-the-art in silicon microphotonics and what we can expect in the near future. The book presents an overview of the current understanding of obtaining light from silicon. It concentrates on low-dimensional silicon structures, like quantum dots, wires and wells, but also covers alternative approaches like porous silicon and the doping of silicon with rare-earth elements. The emphasis is on the experimental and theoretical achievements concerning the optoelectronic properties of confined silicon structures, especially sillicon-based photonic crystals, obtained during recent years. Also, an in-depth discussion of the route towards a silicon laser is presented.
Stefano Ossicini is Full Professor of General Physics at the Faculty of Engineering (Reggio Emilia) of the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia (Italy) and Director of the PhD School in 'Physical and NanoSciences' of the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia. He also work a researcher within the CNR-National Institute for the Physics of Matter (INFM) at the INFM National Center S3 nanoStructures and bioSystems at Surfaces". He graduated in Physics in 1976 at the University of Rome. From 1978-82 he was active as post-doc and assistant at the Department of Theoretical Physics of the Free University in Berlin (Germany). From 1982-984 researcher at the University of Calabria (Italy). 1984 he went to the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia (Italy). His research activity has mainly focused on the theory of low-dimensional- and nano- systems. In recent years the central topic of his research has been, in particular, the investigation of the structural, electronic and optical properties of semiconductor nanostructures.
Lorenzo Pavesi is Professor of experimental physics at the university of Trento (Italy). Born the 21st of november 1961, he received his master degree in physics in 1985 at the university of trento and the phd in physics in 1990 at the ecole polytechnique federale of lausanne (switzerland). in 1990 he became assistant professor, an associate professor in 1999 and full professor in 2002 at the university of trento. He organized several international conferences, workshops and schools and is a frequent invited speaker. He manages several research projects, both national and european.
